Jacob’s World

My nephew entered into this world approximately six years ago and we were happy when he was born. He was always a happy baby and smiled all the time even when he was sick, we had a nickname for him. He was a healthy weight and we called him “boneless” he seemed to be just a ball of love. Everything seemed to be going fine until he was about two and we noticed he did not want to interact with most people, he started to stare at the television and ignore most people. We rationalized it was just a behavior that most two year olds have, we eventually had to look at the truth, there was something wrong. Time stood still for us and we literally held our breaths, my sister did not know what to think or who to talk to, no one wanted to say it, Autism.

I have worked with individuals with special needs for over seventeen years and I did not have the courage to admit he was displaying the signs of Autism. The truth was finally given to my sister a little over two years ago, we do not love him any less if anything this has made my siblings and others reach out to him more. He still smiles at times and he still has the ability to light up a room. Truth be told I would have to admit he is my favorite nephew, but I will keep that as mine and Jacob’s secret. I love my sister dearly and pray for her to maintain the strength it will take to raise this special child, an angel in the purest of forms. I respect those who are able to raise these special individuals and pray that one day they will find if not a cure better programs and doctors to help these families in need. So to you, my sweet Jacob, if only for a little while I pray to one day live in your world.
